Lecturer: Peter Mabbutt

The use of hypnosis for pain management, hypnoanalgesia, has a long and effective history. Supported by empirical research, there is currently a rapid resurgence of its use in medical practice worldwide as a result of the more integrative approach to patient care.

This 3-weekend course explores the adjunctive use of hypnosis in pain management. It will provide you with a comprehensive hands-on approach that demonstrates how pain management using hypnosis can be incorporated into existing methods of conventional pain control. The course is designed to be experiential and you will learn and experience hypnotic induction and deepening techniques along with the common hypnotic approaches to pain management.

You will also discover that this viable alternative to pain control can help reduce the use of antinociceptive drugs, thus potentially reducing the risk of tolerance and dependence.

At the end of the course participants will have:

  • experience of inducing and managing trance in fellow delegates
  • experience of producing analgesic phenomena using hypnosis
  • experience of the application hypnotherapeutic pain management techniques
  • understanding and experience of hypnotic techniques that can increase pain threshold by manipulating cognitive factors
  • explored hypnotic pain management protocols including those used in surgery
  • understanding of the evidence basis for pain control through hypnosis
  • personal experience of hypnosis and the ability to return to the trance state using self-hypnosis
  • the ability to teach patients/clients presenting for pain management self-hypnosis
  • an understanding of the mechanisms of secondary gain and how this can prevent otherwise effective pain management
  • an understanding of the ethical use of hypnosis
